I am a learner, always have been.  As a child it was, “Try your best, lad, that’s all we want from you”.  “Try again.  Fail again.  Fail better” were the lines I read as a pretentious student.  More recently it’s phrases such as “talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence” that tend to chime with me.

I have been an English teacher in four schools, and am in my third year as an Academic Deputy at The Grammar School at Leeds.  I will continue learning in both roles as long as I am in them.  My hope is that writing here will, over time, clarify my thinking across a series of areas.  The great blogs and tweets we can now read and the many wonderful teachers I have heard speak have all inspired me to try to develop my own practice through writing an education blog.
